Letter from John Heard to Peter H. Burnett, 1850.

The item is a facsimile of a letter from John Heard to Peter H. Burnett, Governor of California, recounting the events of the Sacramento Squatter Riots of August 14, 1850, a dispute, in which several men died, over rights to settle on John Sutter's land grant. Heard gives a detailed account of the shootout at 4th and J Streets and of the thwarted attack on a prison ship docked on the Sacramento waterfront. He names several of the dead and wounded on both sides, including Mayor Harkin Bigelow and Dr. Charles Robinson (one of the leaders of the squatters). Heard also discusses the non-violent clashes and litigation that led up to the gunfight, and assures the Governor that the squatters will be "brought to justice."
